ARO essays on design references and their possible applications to imagery, brands and talent.

01Design thinking

Before the image, the question

The Design Council’s Double Diamond frames design through discovery, definition, development and delivery. Research opens possibilities; synthesis gives them direction. Its value lies in understanding the challenge before choosing a solution.

For a campaign, this can begin with conversations about audiences, context and business objectives. A brief becomes more than a list of deliverables: it clarifies what the image needs to communicate. Is a brand introducing a product, changing perceptions or reaching a new audience? Each question calls for different choices.

One practical approach is to compare two visual directions at a small scale, listen to the people involved and record what each proposal communicates. What is learned informs production. This is an application to fashion communication, not a formula that guarantees results.

02Design and business

Design as the creation of meaning

Roberto Verganti’s research places meaning at the heart of design-driven innovation. This perspective invites discussion of the role a product or service plays in people’s lives, beyond appearance and performance.

For a fashion brand, one possible reading is to ask what remains recognisable when a collection changes. Casting, art direction, language and the buying experience can express a shared vision. Coherence comes from connected decisions, without requiring every image to look the same.

This Italian reference offers a strategic perspective. A useful exercise is to articulate the idea a brand wants to represent and compare it with each touchpoint. If photography communicates closeness while service creates distance, there is a design question to address. The criterion is the relationship between intention and experience.

03Method and viability

Creativity with decision criteria

IDEO’s approach connects human needs, technical possibilities and business viability. It offers a useful reference for discussing creative projects through criteria that clients, teams and talent can share.

In an AI-assisted production, for example, an appealing image is only part of the assessment. Does it represent the product faithfully? Can it be produced on time? Does the investment make sense for the objective? These questions belong in both the brief and the review.

The same reasoning can inform talent development: listen to the person’s goals, assess available support and discuss concrete opportunities. A small portfolio test or a targeted introduction can generate learning before a larger investment. A method helps make choices explicit and open to revision.
